Schoolgirl Hair Styles

The schoolgirl look has become almost an archetype, with her knee-high socks, pleated skirt and bouncy hair. If you want to create this persona for a special occasion like Halloween or just feel like channeling your inner kid, know that school girl hairstyles are at the center of this look.

A classic schoolgirl look is a center part and two braids. French-braid your hair while it's slightly damp and fasten each end with a small ponytail holder. You can top off the ends with bows or you can give the look a grownup twist with a huge flower pin behind one ear. Bonus: after you're done with the braids, shake them free with your fingers for easy, tousled waves and a grown up look.

Another look that rocks the center part is the ubiquitous schoolgirl pigtails. You can mix these up by varying the height of each pigtail. Start by running a shine serum over your hair with a boar's bristle brush. Now, part down the center and smooth each half into a ponytail holder. For a super-girly look, position the pigtails high on your head, and curl the ends. For a more sophisticated take, fasten your pigtails low and behind the ears.

Every schoolgirl needs a hairstyle staple, something that can be done quickly and still look adorable. Use a boar bristle brush and gel to sleek back your hair, put a holder around the ponytail. Finish your ponytail by wrapping a small strand of hair around the ponytail holder to hide it and fasten it with a bobby pin.

For a looser, wavier pony, muss up your hair with hair powder or texturizing spray, and comb it back with your fingers. You can fasten it with a flower or a long ribbon, dress it up with a classy headband or place subtle, sparkling bobby pins throughout it for a fairy-tale effect.

Release your inner cheerleader with a bouncy side ponytail. Scrunch mousse into your hair or wave the bottom half with a big-barreled curling iron. When hair is dry, use your fingers to sweep it into a side ponytail. Fasten the ponytail high on your head if you want to look super 1980s, or keep it low, glamorous and pulled over one shoulder.

Sometimes a center part just won't cut it for a schoolgirl. To get this popular school girl hairstyle, part your hair in a straight line when it's slightly damp. Using a fine-toothed comb, 'cut' out a triangle of hair on one side of the part and comb it over to the other side. Repeat this on the opposite side of the part, moving toward the back of the head.

Use this look with pigtails, braids or a pretty up-do. If your hair is thinner, try emphasizing the part by smoothing down hair on either side of the part with a little gel or pomade.
