Short Curly African Hair Styles

Those with short, African American hair often seek curly hair styles. Not only do curls tend to hold well with African hair textures, but they look great and are versatile. Many curly hairstyles can be achieved with short natural hair or through the addition of extensions.

Straw curls are tight, springy, and look flattering on all face shapes. These curls also work with different grades of hair, although the tighter the hair's natural coil, the better it will retain this style. Straw curls can also last for weeks at a time, and the only maintenance they need is an occasional spray of hair sheen, and oiling of the scalp. This is a beautiful, natural hairstyle that can be achieved in the salon, or at home by the application of long curling rods. If you do your own straw curls at home, remember to take very small sections of hair for each curler. Also, your finished style will hold longer if you set your hair while it is wet--apply moisturizer before sectioning the wet hair, and spritz the hair with flexible styling spray once all of the hair is in curlers.

Alternatively, you can get straw curls by having a weave sewn in. There are extensions available that are already straw curled. It is best to visit a salon professional for this, unless you have experience with braiding hair and adding in extensions.

Loose waves are a curly style for short hair, but they work best on relaxed hair. Pressed hair can also flaunt this style, although it will not last as long. The best thing about creating waves in your short hair is that you can easily do it at home. Wash your hair, and deep condition it. Apply moisturizer to your wet hair then let it air dry, or sit under a dryer on a medium heat setting. Section your hair into four parts--across the crown and vertically down the center. Separate each section into another four parts. Make tight plaits with each section all the way down to the ends of the hair. After you are done braiding, spritz the hair with flexible styling spray, and let it sit overnight. In the morning, take down the plaits, and your hair will have waves. Throughout the day, your waves should hold, although the next day, they will be less defined.

Spiral curls are another style that works well on short hair. They are tighter than loose waves, but quite larger than straw curls. The difference between this style and many others is that it can be achieved with a curling iron. Spiral curls work well on relaxed hair, but you can try it on pressed hair or natural hair that has been blown out. Hair that has been cleaned, conditioned, and flat ironed will hold this style the best. To protect your hair from the heat, apply a non-frizz serum that contains heat protectants. Start by making a part in the head--it can be a straight or side part, but this will be how your final style lays. Section your hair into four, and then part each of these sections into eight pieces of hair. Using a half-inch curling iron set on medium-high or high heat, take each piece of hair and wrap it around the barrel. Hold the hair in place for at least 15 seconds, then release it from the barrel. Repeat this process for all of the other pieces of hair. Once you are done, spritz the final look with flexible styling spray. Spiral curls do not last for more than a day, but it is a fun, easy look to achieve.
