How to Spike Short Hair For Men

Men often lack the same hairstyling resources available to them that women have, and if you're making the change from a flat hair style to a short and spiky hairdo, you'll want some tips for maintaining your new look. Short hair spikes well, especially with the right haircut, but it's important to learn the technique as well as the right products for creating your spikes. This makes all the difference between a nice, spiky look and one that falls flat halfway through the day.

Instructions

Dry your hair with a hair dryer while tousling it with your free hand. Don't comb your hair after you start drying it since this will straighten it instead of helping it to spike. Position your hair dryer near the base of the neck and point it up so the hair gets a nice lift while drying. This adds more volume. If you don't own a hair dryer, allow your hair to air dry and use your hands to tousle it every 15 minutes while it's drying.

Massage a liberal amount of pomade, a waxy hair styling product, through your hair. The pomade may stay in your hair for a day or two even after you shower depending on how strong it is. This can help you achieve a spiky look more easily, but if it bothers you buy a pomade-removing shampoo or use a styling wax instead. The styling wax doesn't provide the same hold, but is much easier to remove.

Tousle your hair with your hands after liberally covering it with the pomade or styling wax and use your fingers to smooth chunks of hair up into spikes. If you're having trouble, turn your hair dryer on high for about one minute and move it over your entire head. The strong wind will do the work for you.
