Instructions for Hairstyles for Long Hair

Women tend to fall into a hairstyling rut and are afraid to try new techniques. Whether you'd like to achieve the natural look or go for a fancy updo, long hair affords you the opportunity to create just about any hairstyle. Add curls for texture, straighten kinky hair or inject shine into dull locks. Simply parting your hair differently can give you a whole new look. If you're looking for new ways to change up your hairstyle, consider the following techniques and tricks.

Shampoo and condition hair. Then, towel-dry. (See Reference 1)

Work a golf ball-sized amount of mousse or blow-drying lotion through sectioned-off wet hair, using a comb. Choose a product that provides moisture and protects hair from heat styling. (See Reference 1)

Dry your hair using a blow dryer with a diffuser attachment. (See Reference 1)

Wrap your hair around a hot curling iron to create curls. Starting on the lower sections of hair, work your way to your crown. Run a comb through curls and spray with hairspray. (See Reference 1)

Part your hair in a zig-zag line. This kind of part works well with dense hair, as it will show clearly. First, part your hair in a straight line, down the middle of your crown. Using a styling comb, "cut" out a triangle on one side of the part. Repeat, working backwards. You can make the zig-zag as severe or narrow as you like. (See Reference 2)

Part your hair on a curve to create an asymmetrical style and give you a swept-over look. You can also use this kind of part in updos. (See Reference 2)

Part your hair diagonally to add volume to one side of the part. This part also can be used in several updos to fill in gaps. (See Reference 2)

Slick back your hair by first rinsing it with warm or hot water. Massage a strong-hold gel through locks. Comb back first with a wide-tooth comb, and then a fine-tooth one. (See Reference 3)

Pump up your volume by applying styling gel to your scalp and ends after shampooing and conditioning hair. Evenly distribute the gel, then comb through with a wide-tooth comb. Flip your head over and blow dry hair on low heat or use a diffuser, starting at the scalp. Hold hair out from your head while drying. When hair is halfway dried, finish drying it with your head upright. (See Reference 3)

Cut in blunt bangs to your long locks. To keep the line straight, use a headband as a guideline. Keep the line clean by cutting below the headband and remember to allow extra length for bounce-back. (See Reference 3)
