How to Spike Scene Hair

"Scene" hairstyles are extreme and are not for shrinking violets or anyone who doesn't want to stand out in a crowd. Scene hair is generally characterized by lots of volume at the top with shorter layers graduating down to longer, straight layers at the bottom. Spiking the shorter top layer (in the back) is a way to style scene hair and this involves some work and technique to get your hair to stand up. You may not get it right the first time, so you'll have to practice to get the look you want.

Instructions

Wash your hair and dry it with a hair dryer or let it air dry. Part your bangs the way you want them.

Spray some heat-protecting spray in your hair from the middle of your head and forward. Straighten the front section of your hair but do not spray or straighten the back half. Even if your hair is naturally straight, use the flat iron to get a sleek, edgy look.

Rub a dime-sized amount of hair gel (maximum-hold or made especially for spiking) between your fingertips and start rubbing the roots at the top of your head (the area you didn't straighten). Gently rough up the roots and lift your fingers upward in each small area at a time until the whole upper-back part of your hair is spiked.

Hold the ends of the spikes and spray them with hair spray to define them even more.

Wash, dry and part your hair the way you like it. Use clips to help keep the sections separate as you work. If your hair is four inches or longer, you will need to use a slightly different technique.

Hold a one-inch-wide section up in the back of your head and spray it with some maximum-hold hair spray. Tease the back of this section with a comb and continue holding it until it dries. Continue spraying and teasing one-inch-wide sections until you have all the spikes you want.

Spray all the spikes and use your fingers to define the tips even more.
