Instructions for 1950s Hairstyles

The 1950s evokes images of poodle skirts, ponytails, Elvis, the movie "Grease" and the television show "Happy Days," which both depict that time period. Mamie Eisenhower was first lady, and her hairstyle made bangs popular at the time. Female movie stars of the day often had fluffy, curly, feminine hairstyles, which established a trend of a lot of time and money spent on hair care.

Look through old magazines from that period, watch 1950s movies, and study photographs to see the hairstyles that were in fashion during that period. You have struck research gold if you can find women's magazines that give instructions for recreating a hairstyle, or books from beauty colleges of that period that give detailed instructions on creating specific hairstyles.

Many 1950s hairstyles included bangs. There were pixie haircuts that had a ducktail cut in the back--like the one often worn by actress Doris Day. There also were poodle haircuts. Longer hairstyles were cut in layers that were different of those today.

Try to find these lines in the photos you study so you can style the hair properly. Don't forget the ponytails that 1950s teenagers wore. Most ponytail wearers had bangs across their foreheads and the rest of the hair was one length.

Study a diagram for making pin curls, then practice making them. Pin curls made while hair was wet was the basis for many hairstyles in the 1950s. Permanent waves also were popular to achieve the look of pin curls on a daily basis. Permanents also helped the pin curl look hold and last longer. Sometimes small curlers were used, as were clamps that made waves in the hair. Hairstyles in the 1950s were set in place with setting gels, lotions and lacquer-type hairspray.
