The Best Ways to Wear Hair to a Dance

Want to dance? Keeping your hair in tact while attending a dance can be difficult, but it isn't impossible. Always work with day-after hair---meaning the day after it's been washed---so it has some of its natural oils, which will make your hair easier to manage.

Pulling hair up is a great idea, especially if you're sporting bold jewelry like a large necklace or massive earrings. If you have shoulder-length hair or longer, go for a sexy half-up, half-down hairstyle. Set the crown of your hair in a few large hot rollers. This isn't going to make the crown curly, just give it some serious volume. After letting the rollers cool for about 20 minutes, spray hair with a mist of hairspray and "set" with your blow dryer on the lowest setting. Remove rollers and shake hair out a bit, but be careful not to touch it too much. Give yourself a deep part at one side, and hold the top half of hair up with a hair clip. Tease the top to give it some volume and then smooth down any bumps with a fine-toothed comb. Set with hair spray. This is a great look for straight, curly or wavy hair.

Pull hair up to keep it off your neck. If the setting is a venue that may be warm, a sleek ponytail is the way to go. Straighten hair by blow-drying damp hair and then sectioning it off by using a flat iron. Be sure to spray a thermal protectant on beforehand to protect your hair from such heat. Now that you have chic, straight hair, pull it back into a ponytail at the center of the head. Pull it tight, and secure it with a hair elastic. Be sure there are no baby hairs or strays because you want a polished look that translates to a dance setting, not just any old ponytail. This looks very modern with thin gold or silver hoop earrings or geometric earrings.

If your hair is long and wavy, don't fight the curl. Instead, embrace your natural beauty with the help of a styling cream. Shampoo and condition hair as usual. When you're finished, work about a nickel size of styling cream through your hair, focusing on the ends. Twist hair up into a bun at the top of your head, and secure it with a hair elastic. Go about your day. You can also sleep with hair like this overnight. Remove the hair elastic anywhere from four to eight hours later, and you'll have gorgeous waves. Spray hair lightly with hairspray, and toss with fingers for volume. If you feel this look is too much, carefully wrap waves into a loose bun at the nape of the neck and secure with bobby pins. This hair style has a romantic, bohemian feel that looks fantastic and is easy to pull off.
