How to Prepare Hair for Braiding

Hair braiding is an ancient art, traceable back to the days of the Pharaohs in Egypt. It is just as popular today, with various braid patterns and styles employed by hair designers for formal or casual wear. Before you begin braiding, learn some hair preparation techniques that will make the process easier.

Instructions

Brush clean hair thoroughly to remove all tangles. If your hair is dry and frizzy, wash it the day before you braid to allow the natural oil from your scalp to smooth down the flyaways.

Try applying a little styling mouse to the roots of your hair, turn your head upside down and blow dry the mousse for a few seconds with a blow dryer. When you're ready to braid, your hair will have a little volume.

Spray with a very light misting of hairspray if your hair is too slippery to braid easily. Use just a tiny bit, however, otherwise it may become sticky. The spray will allow you to control the strands better during hair braiding.

Roll your hair on large hot rollers to give it some volume to help hold your braids. Leave the rollers in for half the time you normally would. This works the best on thin straight hair that slips easily.

Separate large portions of hair on the scalp with a wide-tooth comb or a hair pick. A smaller comb is handy for combing through separated sections, making sure they are smooth before incorporating them in your braid.

Use plastic clips or rubber bands to hold back hair until you're ready to braid.

Hold a hand mirror in front of you and face away from the wall mirror to view the back of your head at different stages of braiding. Although you will see a reversed image, you will be able to discern if your hair braiding is straight and smooth.
