Skateboarding has become a popular sport among Americans as well as fans across the globe. Correspondingly, skate apparel and fashion trends have become more popular with kids and adults who participate in the sport professionally or as a hobby. Though there really aren't any skateboard hairstyles that are created specifically for skaters, certain hairstyles worn by professional skateboarders are becoming quite trendy among fans, and hairdos associated with music industry trends are also quite popular.
Emo-Skater Style
The emo haircut is becoming increasingly more popular among skateboarders of all ages, men and women included. The cut is typically a bit jagged and choppy looking, with long bangs that are swept to the side across the forehead. With about one to two inches of length covering the ears, the back of the hair is left long enough to reach the middle of the neck.
Long and Natural
An easy-to-cut-and-maintain style that is popular among skaters is the long and natural overgrown hairstyle. Worn publicly by professional youth skater Riley Hawk--son of Tony Hawk--this hairstyle displays an almost unkempt look. Hair is grown without layers to about jaw or shoulder level, and trimmed to be one length all the way around the head and face. Ski hats and headbands or bandannas are often used as an accessory to keep the hair away from the eyes while skating.
Short and Tousled
Famous skateboarder and MTV personality Bam Margera has contributed to skateboard hairstyle fashion trends as well. Many young skaters have adopted Bam's short and tousled look. Trimmed neatly around the ears, and kept about an inch and a half across the top and back, this hairstyle is cut a bit choppy to add texture. Gel or mousse is used to tousle the hair and create a spiky, messy look.
Mohawk
Hollywood actor Mark Salling is one of the many skateboard enthusiasts who has been seen sporting a subdued version of the punk-rock Mohawk hairstyle. Many variations of this style have been accepted by boys and girls in the skateboarding community. Mark keeps his hair clipped very short across the majority of his head, with just a narrow strip down the middle that is left slightly longer. Other variations of this style may include a shaved head with a strip of longer hair down the middle that is gelled to stand straight up, or the popular "faux hawk" style that allows the hair to be a bit longer all around and is styled with mousse or gel to resemble an authentic Mohawk without shaving the head.
Girls' Layered Skater Cut
Skater girls are often attracted to the fashionable new goth look, and tend to lean toward the trendy emo styles. A popular hairstyle for skater girls is to have short bangs with a number of textured layers throughout the bulk of the hair. Shorter layers are cut underneath, with a few randomly placed strands of hair left longer from the top to create a radical look. Girl's layered skater cuts are typically razor cuts, and often accented with vibrantly colored streaks.
