Natural African American hair is often healthier than it's chemically relaxed counterparts. Maintaining natural hairstyles requires a regimen that includes consistent moisturizing and strengthening. Styling natural African American hair may seem like a time consuming task and many African Americans who choose natural hair may feel that the styles are restrictive. However, natural African American hairstyles can be versatile and easy to do.
Bantu knots
Bantu Knots are also known as Zulu knots and are an easy hairstyle to complete and maintain. The hair is sectioned into whatever shape and size you prefer (1 inch triangle or square sections are the most common) and twisted around itself into a tight knot. The knots are held in place with rubber bands. These can last for up to two weeks as long as you wrapped your hair with a silk or satin scarf at night.
Braids
Braids are another easy solution for natural African American hair. Braids consist of sections of hair that are further divided into three pieces. These sections criss-cross each other until you reach the end. You can use a variety of rubber bands, clips or beads to keep the braid from unraveling. Braids can stay in for up to a month with proper maintenance.
Cornrows
Cornrows are recognized by their distinctive vertical parts and close-to-the-scalp braids. You can customize this hairstyle with parts going in various directions but the basic cornrow runs front to back. Although a criss-crossing technique similar to braiding is used, you will have to make sure you add a bit of hair from the row to each piece as you braid down. This hairstyle can take some time to master so you should consult a hairstylist until you are able to do them on your own. This style can last for about four weeks with proper maintenance.
Twists
Twists are sometimes referred to as "two-strand twists." This hairstyle works best on kinky natural hair but those with a looser curl pattern may be able to create this style with the help of a hair gel or pomade. Part hair into sections and make each section into two parts. Simply twist the two parts around each other and secure with a rubber band at the end. Smaller, tighter twists will last longer but even with larger twists you can expect the hairstyle to last about two to three weeks with proper maintenance.
Locs
Locs, also known as dreadlocks, come in many shapes sizes and textures. They are characterized by rope-like strands. The simplest locks are started by simply letting hair grow. The hair will start to form thick locs all on its own. Cultivated locs can be started by twists and braids as well as by a professional called a loctician. The techniques used to start locs vary by the desired loc size as well as the texture of the hair. The locked hair is not combed but the "new growth" near the scalp will have to be periodically re-locked to maintain the style.
Wash and Go
As the name implies, a wash-and-go hairstyle is very simple. Wash and moisturize hair and then let air dry. The result is an afro-like style. You can use your fingers to style the hair a bit or you can add clips or other hair ornaments. Try not to touch hair too much to avoid frizziness.
Afro
An afro is similar to a wash-and-go style except the hair is often blow dried and combed into a full, round shape. An afro can be parted down the middle and secured on each side to create afro puffs.
Straw/Roller Sets
These styles are very similar. Roller sets create bigger, looser curls with actual hair rollers while straw sets make smaller, tighter curls using drinking straws. Both are done after hair has been washed and moisturized. Wet hair is sectioned off and wrapped around the roller or the straw and secured with pins. Make sure hair is entirely dry before removing the rollers or straws and then finger style.
Straight Styles
Natural African American hair can be straightened using flat irons, blow dryers or hot combs. Although hair straighted without a relaxer will not last after washing, it is possible to achieve temporary straight styles for special occasions or as a short-term change. Hair must be moisturized and protected from heat damage with products like coconut and olive oils.
