Step-by-Step for Black Hair Twists

Styling black hair in a twists style is a great way to create low-maintenance hair. Once the style is created, you can leave it in for several days or even a couple of weeks. You don't need to add extensions for this style, but if you do, it will last even longer. This is an easy style perfect for children and adults.

You need only a few tools to design twists on black hair: a wide-tooth comb, a rat-tail comb, plastic hair clips, lightweight holding gel and a moisturizer, if desired.

Begin with moisturized hair, using the product of your choice. This may be an oil or a cream. Your hair can be damp or dry; you may need to experiment to see what gives you the best look. Divide the hair into four sections and use the hair clips to hold the hair you're not currently working on out of the way.

Decide what size you want your twists to be. Fatter twists don't take as long to style, but they won't last as long as smaller twists. Begin at the nape of the neck. For average size twists, work on sections no larger than 1 inch around. Use the rat-tail comb for creating neat parts and comb through the hair with the wide-tooth comb. Apply a lightweight gel if desired; this will give your twists more hold and prevent them from unraveling easily. Divide a section of hair that's square in shape. Separate the section of hair in two and begin twisting the strands around one another. Keep your tension even and firm, but don't twist too tightly. Twist this section of hair all the way to the ends.

Natural black hair that has no straightening chemicals on it will be able to hold the twists without any help on the ends. If your hair is straightened, you can use snap-free rubber bands to keep twists from unraveling.

Repeat the twist technique all over the head, keeping each section as uniform as possible. When you reach the front of your head, part the hair on one side if desired and direct the twists to either side of the part.

Cover your twists at night with a large silky hair bonnet. A bonnet won't crush your twists as a scarf might. In the morning, just shake your twists out and go.
