If you're a woman with long hair, you may spend a lot of time styling it and getting it to look just so, but often you don't have the time to do your hair, or you just want to get it out of your face to do a job. Putting your hair in a ponytail, a twist or a bun can give you a neat look when you have something more important than a time-consuming styling to do.
Beginner
If you're a beginner at pulled-back styles, try easy-to-create looks before moving on to more complicated styles. The easiest style is a ponytail. One that sits low on the head is simple and fast. Use a little gel or mousse to give your hair staying power. Gather the hair at the nape of your neck and secure it with an elastic band. If you want to dress up your ponytail, add a sleek headband or a flower accessory.
Advanced
When you've had some time to practice the simple ponytail, you can use it as a basis for other pulled-back styles. A dancer's bun begins with a ponytail. Twist the ponytail into a coil and pin it in place. You can also place your ponytail higher on the head. A hint: A small-toothed comb can help you get a straight and smooth look on top of your head.
Professional
Once you've mastered pulling your hair back in different ways, you can experiment with the most advanced styles. Use chopsticks or a pen to create a bun by twisting the hair and then weaving the stick through it, or pull the hair back into a half up, half down ponytail. Practice on yourself and others to perfect your technique, making sure to add lots of accessories. Head wraps, barrettes and pins are just a few accessories you can add to your hair.
