There are various names for hairstyles that are puffy on top. Some people refer to them as bumps, while others refer to them as their 1960s counterpart, the bouffant. No matter what you choose to call it, bouffant hairstyles have made a comeback and can add a high fashion look to any style. All you need to create these types of styles is a fine-toothed comb, hairspray and a paddle brush.
Bangs
One popular way to wear a bouffant hairstyle is to just pull your bangs back. Start by separating a small section of hair in the center of your head closest to your forehead. Tease the hair in thin layers across the section, working your way back. Gather the hair, and then use a paddle brush or your fingers to smooth the top of the hair. Use a barrette or bobby pins to pin the hair, then spray it with hairspray. If the rest of you hair is flat and limp, tease the roots slightly on the underside of the hair to give it a little volume. You can do this style with both curly and straight hair, or you can flip just the ends of the hair.
Updo
Adding a bump to an updo is an easy way to make a traditional style a little trendier and cutting edge. For this style, you must tease the back and sides of your hair. To find a starting point, draw an invisible line with your comb from behind your right ear, over your head to behind your right ear, and tease everything from this point back. Tease thin sections of hair by holding the hair straight up and pulling a comb downward towards the roots. You'll want to do this until the hair is teased about three inches on the section of hair. Gather the hair into a bump, running your hands or brush lightly over the top to smooth it, and then use bobby pins to secure the hair. Create your updo from this point, leaving the bobby pins in place. You can pull the hair into a French twist, a low knot or side knot, or a half-updo.
Headband
Pairing a headband with a bouffant is a very retro, chic hairstyle that can be either formal or more casual, depending on the way you style you hair and the type of accessories you use. Tease your hair in the back, starting from the back of your ears and teasing all the hair from that point back. The bump can be as small or large as you please, depending on how bold you want the style to be. Once the hair is teased, smooth the top and spray with hairspray. You can use bobby pins to secure the hair below the bump, but you must be careful to hide the bobby pins, since the hair will be hanging down in the back. If you don't use bobby pins, add a little extra hairspray since it may be more likely to drop out throughout the day. Finally, add a decorative headband.
