Instructions to Wear Du Rags

A du rag is a piece of fabric that resembles a bandanna and is used to wrap the hair of both men and women. Du rags have been associated with the hip-hop culture, but are not exclusive to it. Anyone who wants to keep hair away from his face can use a du rag. You can get the du rag look by using a bandanna or similarly shaped fabric, but you will get the best results if you purchase an actual du rag.

Instructions

    1

Gather your hair in a low ponytail and secure it with an elastic ponytail band. You also can braid your hair. If you are a woman, you can leave your hair down if you wish. However, the point of a du rag is part style and part function. Put your hair in a ponytail if your goal is to keep your hair away from your face.

    2

Place the du rag on your scalp so that the long tie pieces fall at your neck and the front part of the du rag rests near your forehead. If you are using a bandanna, fold it in a half triangle. Place the long straight side, the hypotenuese of the triangle, on your forehead so that the other two sides of the bandanna fall near your neck.

    3

Pull the ties tightly at your neck. If you are using an actual du rag, bring the ties up around your forehead and back down to your neck before tying the rag in a knot or bow. This will give your du rag a tighter fit. If you are using a bandanna, you will have only enough material to tie the two bandanna ends into a knot at the nape of your neck.
