How to Wear a Fancy Ponytail

Ponytails are often the go-to style for long-haired women and men, and they are most commonly worn at the gym or to the park. But ponytails do not have to be mundane, and can add a bit of glamour to an evening ensemble or classy daytime look. Ponytails can look fancy when they are slicked back, as well as when they are slightly messy and unkempt.

Create a sleek, straight ponytail style. This ponytail sits on the crown of the head and looks best on straightened hair. Flat-iron your hair to ensure maximum smoothness. Brush all of your hair straight to the back of your head. Tie your hair in place with an elastic band. Spritz the hair with a bit of hairspray to keep wispy hairs out of your face. If you have bangs, keep the fringe out of your face with a few bobby pins. Pair this fancy ponytail with chandelier earrings or a statement necklace.

Wear the slightly tousled ponytail. Pull your hair up to the back of your head and tie it in place with an elastic hair tie. Keep the hair tie slightly loose. Tousle the hair around your face and pull out a few pieces to frame your face. Run your fingers through the ponytail to create volume. Pair this hairstyle with a tunic dress, a loose blouse or a casual daytime outfit, such as shorts and a pair of gladiator sandals.

Wear a low-lying, side-swept ponytail. This look works especially well for women with bangs and layers. Tie the hair to the side in a low ponytail. Pull out a few loose pieces and drape the ponytail over one shoulder. This ponytail pairs well with a sleeveless shirt or dress, but can also be paired with a cardigan and a simple blouse.

Create a braided ponytail. Pull your hair into a sleek ponytail. Instead of allowing the hair to hang loose in the back, braid the extra hair and tie it off at the bottom. This versatile look can be worn for daytime or evening, and pairs well with glamorous earrings, a necklace or a bright pop of color on the lips.
