Rock Style Hairstyles

Rock styles of hair are often identified by choppy, shaggy layers, giving a "free" feeling to the styles. Shaggy mohawks, emo hair and long layers are all examples of rocker styles that give the individual freedom to express himself. Rock star hair is often dyed dark and given bright highlights in random colors. Sometimes, especially with long, layered cuts, the hair is left it's natural color for a more natural, free look.

This hairstyle is a shaggy, rocker take on the traditional mohawk. To create the style, the stylist cuts the hair short on the sides (leaving about 1 to 2 inches) and puts choppy, jagged layers throughout the hair, tapering it to longer hair at the top and in the back. She keeps the hair on the top and in the back long, reaching a length of about 4 or 5 inches. Choppy layers are added throughout the long hair. The stylist applies a pomade to the hair and tousles it on the sides, defining the choppy layers. She pulls the hair in the front down onto the forehead and lifts the on the top of the head upwards. The hair is pushed up along the top strip of the head, creating tall, soft spikes. Pomade is added to the hair in the back and it is also pushed slightly up. The stylist pulls the hair at the bottom of the head down down and against the neck.

Emo hair is a modern, punk style that is perfect for rock stars. It is characterized by long, side-swept bangs, spikes and layers. The stylist cuts the hair shorter in the back than in the front, tapering it down with random layers. She adds blunt layers throughout the hair, keeping them shorter in the back and at the crown. The bangs are tapered down to the hair in the front and left falling over one eye. The stylist applies a pomade to the hair, spiking it up in the back and at the crown while defining the blunt layers. The hair in the front is smoothed down and straightened. Emo hair is often dyed black or another dark color and given bright highlights in any chosen shade.

This is a traditional, rocker hairstyle. The hair is long and given long layers around the face. The stylist adds extensions if the hair is not long enough, and the hair is either straightened or given natural-looking waves. It is parted in the middle, and if desired, the stylist cuts jagged bangs, tapering them down to meet the layers in the front of the hair. The hair can be dyed any chosen shade, but often it is left natural or colored a dark shade accompanied by bright highlights.
