Easy updo hairstyles are perfect any time of the year and for all different occasions such as proms and weddings. Whether you have short or long hair or thin or thick, there are quick and simple updos you can follow to style your hair and achieve a fashionable look. There are three updos for hair that are especially popular: the side-swept bun, the voluminous updo and the French twist.
Instructions
Side-Swept Bun
- 1
Shampoo and condition your hair.
2Take a 2-inch section from the top front part of your hair and hold it straight up.
3Spray hairspray in a downwards motion on the roots area of the hair.
4Backcomb your hair by combing backwards on the first 2 to 3 inches of hair at the roots with deep, slow strokes. The hair should stand up on its own when you let it go. You may need to backcomb a few times to achieve the desired volume.
5Backcomb the rest of the top of your hair, but lightly at the bottom.
6Tousle hair slightly and pull back into a low side ponytail at the back of your head.
7Secure with a hair elastic.
8Twist the ponytail around into a bun shape and secure with bobby pins, placing a few pins randomly around the circle of the bun to ensure it stays in place.
9Spray hair lightly with hairspray to set the style.
Voluminous Updo
- 10
Brush hair through to prepare for styling. This hairstyle works best on slightly dirty hair, so try to wash hair the day or even night before styling.
11Take a 2-inch section from the top front part of your hair and hold it straight up.
12Spray hairspray in a downwards motion on the roots area of the hair.
13Backcomb this section of hair by combing backwards on the first 2 to 3 inches of hair at the roots with deep, slow strokes. The hair should stand up on its own when you let it go. You may need to backcomb a few times to achieve the desired volume.
14Backcomb the rest of the hair on the top of your head, working in 2-inch sections throughout.
15Brush hair lightly over the top with a natural bristle brush to smooth slightly and gather it together in the back. Your hair should be completely brushed back, with no part showing.
16Roll hair up vertically--either to the left or right, whichever side you prefer--starting at the ends and continuing until you have rolled the hair up to your head. The twist of hair should rest against the back of your head.
17Secure with bobby pins, ensuring the ends of your hair are tucked neatly in underneath the twist. The thicker your hair, the more bobby pins it will take to secure.
18Spray the finished style with hairspray to set the look and help maintain the height and fullness of your hair.
French Twist
- 19
Shampoo and condition hair.
20Blow dry hair with a round brush to add volume to your hair.
21Curl random pieces of hair with a curling iron, winding them away from the face. Do not worry about it being perfect or about curling every piece of hair, as it will be put up in an updo.
22Backcomb the hair on the top half of your head. Work in 2-inch sections, combing backwards on the first 2 to 3 inches of hair at the roots on each section with deep, slow strokes. The hair should stand up on its own when you let it go. You may need to backcomb a few times to achieve the desired volume.
23Tousle hair lightly with fingers.
24Part hair as desired--any part works for this style--and direct all your hair over to the right at the back of your head.
25Secure hair to the side with two to three bobby pins, placing them vertically in hair.
26Twist hair vertically to the left, starting at the ends and continuing until you have rolled the hair up to your head. The twist of hair should rest against the back of your head.
27Secure with bobby pins, ensuring the ends of your hair are tucked neatly in underneath the twist. The thicker your hair, the more bobby pins it will take to secure.
28Tousle the top of your hair gently with fingers to slightly dishevel the hair.
29Spray hair lightly with hairspray to set the style.
